Equinor's operations at Herøya Industrial Park include research, technology, project activities and support services. The unit at Porsgrunn has some 210 employees, of whom 120 are linked to the research unit.

Research and development

Among research activities mention should be made of separation and process technology, multi-phase technology and gas technology. The unit at Porsgrunn is responsible for the operation of world-class test facilities, including the facilities at Kårstø (K-lab). Here Equinor carries out large-scale testing relating to its global oil and gas activities. In addition, Equinor is working on renewable energy such as solar and wind power, and researching useful solutions for CO₂ capture and storage.

Projects and acquisitions

Equinor's business area Projects and Acquisitions plans and executes the company's expansion projects and major modifications, and is also responsible for acquisitions. The Porsgrunn unit mainly works on implementing systems for plant and project completion.

Materials technology

Supplies expertise to all business areas throughout the world. The Porsgrunn unit has skills in projects and operation, development and maintenance of technical standards, technological development, certification and implementation and laboratories for materials technology and chemical analysis.
